Narcissus 'Topolino'

Narcissus 'Topolino' in the Front Woodland garden with Crocus 'Spring Beauty'
All of our plantings are ahead of season this year, with the daffodils blooming in mid-March instead of mid-April (see last year). I wanted to be sure not to miss posting on Narcissus 'Topolino', as she is one of my favorites.

We planted clumps of Narcissus 'Topolino' in the Front Woodland garden two falls ago, and they seem to be perennializing well. It is no small feat to dig holes in this root-ridden area, so planting several at once was especially helpful.  They have shot up this March in our zone 5 garden, along with Hemerocallis (daylily) foliage, Sedum 'Acre' and Crocus 'Spring Beauty'. The forsythias are just starting to bloom in these photos from March 18th. This curb strip (also known as a hell strip or parkway) is so much brighter for the flowers that are blooming in it, instead of just the normal turf.

Narcissus 'Topolino' blooming as the forsythia is just beginning also.

  4. Topolino looks delightful. I've givn up on Daffodils, they just don't do well here, the winter isn't cold enough soon enough to prompt them into growth. Christina

  6. Lovely combination Wendy. Digging to plant bulbs is hard and I can just imagine how hard it is with that great big tree nearby. I'm sure I have Topolino in my garden and spring beauty is one of my favourite crocus flowers. We are well ahead of season this year - I've tulips in flower 4 weeks early here.

(I updated my impatiens post as there's a new disease resistant impatien for sale in UK and US)

    1. Rosie, Thanks for the update. How interesting that they came up with a resistant one so soon for sale.

We are also a month ahead of time, with tulips just green at the moment, waiting for another warm period to pop.

  7. Hi Julie, I just discovered your beautiful blog! I love this post about Narcissus 'Topolino', it looks so nice in your Front Woodland garden. Great photography, too! I garden in San Diego, California and we are actually behind of the spring season and having unusual cool weather. The good part of that is that the roses are lasting longer on the bushes :-)!

  10. I think PA grows the best crop of daffodils, or at least that is how I remember the fields and forest edge with them.
