Fall Foliage in Pennsylvania

Yellow maple (acer) leaves and the red-edged oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) by our Shade Path gate.

The leaves are as brightly colored as the remaining flowers in our Pennsylvania garden (see GBBD Oct 2012). Here are a few photos from the post couple of weeks when we have been out enjoying the sunshine and few warmer days remaining in our zone 5 corner lot.

Maples (Acer) in red and yellow.
The ivy on our back hill remains green for the winter, which is nice since there are so many deciduous trees and shrub along the fence. The potted Japanese maple is still sitting on the back steps and the Hydrangea 'Limelight' is just beginning to peek through the fence.
Our red-leafed blueberry bush in the front bed of Pachysandra. Blueberries are a great three season bush that will work for a town garden, though the birds may nab the berries before you do!
Another pretty yellow acer.
My other little photographer, Anna, is following in her older sister's footsteps. She loves to be out taking photos of our flowers with me.
I love seeing the beautiful, fresh green of the columbine (Aquilegia) plants that this time of year, while everything else is going yellow.
The Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa 'Aureola') gets brighter yellow.  The christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) remains green throughout winter.
One of our small dogwood trees, Cornus florida, coloring red beside the garage. Having a planting of evergreen ground cover surrounding deciduous trees and shrubs will give them a nice setting all year round.
Bright yellow leaves tipped in purple on Manchurian lilac Syringa pubescens subsp. patula 'Miss Kim', again with evergreen ground cover underneath.
Photo of Gilmore Gardens taken just before the first real frost two weeks ago. The trees were beautiful out front!
I am linking up to both Foliage follow-up at Digging and Garden Blogger's Foliage Day at My Hesperides Garden.
Thanks Pam and Christina! They both have some beautiful foliage in their gardens, the former in Texas and latter in Italy.  Be sure to check their comments for more foliage in gardens too.

    1. If you are anywhere near Pittsburgh, let me know :) Of course New England is hard beat for color... though the hills of Pennsylvania were really breath-taking just last week on our drive.

  8. You've got some fab colour and I'm especially interested in your ground planting around the shrubs. When I was at Alnwick gardens two weeks ago they had some great contrasts of foliage by using columbine leaves.

  13. Fall in Pennsylvania is the time to focus on the big picture because of all the wonderful leaf color. However, your garden looks great all round. I vow to cut back and prune my plants more next spring so that they won't be so rangy in the fall. We'll see if I get to it.
