Crabapple Jelly!

Pennsylvania crabapple season is here
During one of our afternoon nature walks, my kids spotted a crabapple tree that was just filled with fruit. They begged, "Can we pick some to make crabapple jelly?!?"

Hmmm.... ok.
Our little basket full.
I have never made jelly of any sort, so I was a bit daunted. But after some internet searching, I turned up quite a good crabapple jelly recipe and some interesting facts on crabapples. They are a natural source of pectin, so we were able to make our jelly using just the crabapples, water and sugar.  So we got to work...

The girls pulled off the stems and I cut them in half...
And viola! Crabapple jelly!
Goes very nicely on some honey wheat bread.  Perfect for the last tea time on the patio for the year.

Here is to enjoying the best of fall while it is still here. :)
Anything you are trying out new for harvest time this year?

  1. What a cool idea! And your girls are gorgeous! Like two little angels!
We tried something new this year thanks to our kids: Pickled jalapeño peppers! While we were at the farm picking eggplants for the winter, the kids started picking hot peppers.about 6lbs of jalapeño peppers. The farmer gave them to us for $1 so I had to take them home. We cut them in slices and canned them. I already gave a few as gifts for friends that like hot foods! They were trilled!

    1. Thanks Beth! It is just the perfect amount of sweet tart. When we do it next time, I think I will add a little less sugar too to bring out the tart because we like it that way :)

      Thanks for reading!

  3. That was so good looking to eat, I can just taste the honey wheat bread and jelly, perfect with a cup of tea. I was a home economics teacher and it so refreshing to see the things you are teaching your children, the important things in life.
God Bless You and your family.

  4. The pictures are fabulous. I hadn't realised crab apple jelly goes on bread. I'd thought it was a relish to go with turkey. I see I am adrift. The colour seems to glow.

  5. I usually make quince jelly both sweet and with added chillis to eat with cheese. But I don't have any little helpers like you. They deserve some for tea!

    1. I just said that I would like this jelly with a bit of heat added as well. But the kids would choose the sweet one hands down :)
