The Tropical Nature of Phipps Conservatory Orchid Room

Oncidium Group Orchid in Phipps Orchid Room this February
One thing that I love about Phipps Conservatory's Orchid room is the natural setting full of tropical foliage and rock that is then covered in pretty orchid blooms. There is real substance to the overall garden design, which helps to support such exuberant color. I wanted to help you get a better idea of the setting as a whole of this Orchid Room, so I have included several room shots mixed in with the orchid close-ups. I hope this will give you more of a sense of what it is like to walk around such a room, though you may have to turn on your tea pot for a while to simulate the warm, moist heat! Just be sure not to steam your iPad in the process.

I hope that you enjoy a few more colorful orchids from Phipps Conservatory!

Bromeliads, sea oats and everything tropical make up the strolling paths in Phipps' Orchid Room.
Cascading and ethereal Epidendrum ciliare var. oerstedii, which is native from Mexico to Brazil.
The beautiful large white orchid here is Doritaenopsis DeLeon's Kisses 'DeLeon'
This small wooden bridge is at the far end of the Orchid Room.
Degamoara Winter Wonderland 'White Fairy', seen just at the foot of the wooden bridge above.
Oncidium Group Orchid hanging down from an upper wall.
A view across the center pond to a Phipps' gardener talking with a visitor.
No label on this one, but is one of the Vanda orchids. The pool below raises the humidity.
Yellow Bird orchid (Brassolaelia)
Looking back to the lady slipper orchid section (one of my favorites).
Rhynchostylis gigantea from Asia hanging in pot from a tree.
Vanda Hilo Princess
Full plant view of the blue orchid, Vanda Hilo Princess, hanging on one of the amazing tropical trees in this room. See a close-up of its flowers for more on this orchid.
Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor)
The colorful foliage of Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor) makes a dramatic setting for its white flowers. Its coloring and leaf texture are reminiscent of begonias. It is native to Asia.

Spanish moss dripping from the trees that are covered in ferns and bromeliads.
Paphiopedilum insigne f. sanderae from China.
A luxuriant setting in which to see so many pretty orchids!
I have been more captivated by orchids this winter than I have in the past. My hubby & I are starting to dream up a conservatory area attached to our future home, which would provide some room for orchids, citrus and herbs in the winter time. I will let you know if it ever becomes more than a dream!

  2. Orchids are my favorite when it comes to indoor plants around here. The blooms last for months and I've even managed to get a few to rebloom on a regular basis.

  4. Did you take all those photos with your iPad? Incredible! Our conservatory here in Madison at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens looks very similar. I need to get over there again one of these days! Beautiful post!

    1. No, I am still old fashioned. Well, at least so seven years ago with my DSLR. My husband does let me borrow his though, to look up new plants when I encounter then in my gardening books. :)

  6. Wonderful pictures! We've got a fantastic orchid display at Kew Gardens right now to cheer us all up after the hideously long and grey winter! http://thegallopinggardener.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/orchid-extravaganza-at-londons-kew.html See what you think.
