Havenwood ~ GBBD October 2014

Native asters, Doellingeria umbellata, flowering away at our new garden this autumn.

Welcome to my new garden in Pennsylvania, zone 5 for the autumn!

I have been hard at work this year to put in many new garden area according to my garden master plan (see it here). Before getting to bulb planting yesterday, I took a walk around to capture some of the little fall flowers that are already blooming away here at Havenwood...
Mums on the new "pot patio", which will be the future place for our raised lily pond.
Coreopsis 'Mercury Rising' has a lovely light yellow of the petal reverse which catches the light in a breeze.
Beginning of the Fruit Tunnel: two Triple Crown thornless blackberries.
Re-blooming Clematis 'William Kennett' is still covered with bees on the trellises in the Knot Garden.
Panicum 'Ruby Ribbons' in the Pergola garden... I finally have some room to start growing some of these beauties after all these years of admiring them at Rhone Street Gardens. Hooray for new gardens! :)
My first little Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica. I will be topdressing this with some more grit before winter; may it ever grow!
Agastache 'Black Adder' has looked wonderful in the mostly empty beds in the Pergola garden this month... a shot of needed color to hold me over while I am planting pieces of geraniums everywhere,  allium and lilies for next summer.
Classic: Sedum 'Autumn Joy'
Golden Niobe Weeping Willow, Salix Alba Tristis, is already a beauty beside our old shed.
Coreopsis 'Garnet' is already a superstar in my garden... definitely worth the $3 on clearance. I just wish I had bought more!
Happy October to you!

  1. Your mums look great! I'm trying some this year, but I'm afraid I don't have enough sun. We'll see though, it's fun to try!

    1. Thanks Emily! They do like the sun, and also a cut back by half in July if you are growing them yourself.

    2. I have some tall very large (about 2 feet wide x2) yellow mums and what I did this year was cut only half of them down. So that I could get early and late blooms with them. To enjoy them twice as much! The ones that I cut, I just stuck in the ground elsewhere in the garden and watered them and they took so easily and are blooming still. They are so easy to propogate!

    1. Thanks! We have mostly yellow oak leaves, but that maple from the neighbor's yard is a barrow eye catcher right now!
