Flowers in the Cold! ~ GBBD February 2013

February is here at Gilmore Gardens in Pennsylvania! There are a few early signs of spring today, though they are shivering at the moment in 32 F (0 C) and will be even colder tonight as it is supposed to get down to 17 F (-8 C). We had snow flurries for Valentine's Day yesterday instead of the 40 F that was predicted. But it is warmer inside with all of the heart garlands hanging about thanks to my daughter Grace.

Now, we have just to wait for the first truly warm days. Then our bloom succession will officially begin for the year!

  7. Wow I'm impressed! My Hellebores are under a foot of snow. Every year in the spring I vow that will plant some Galanthus. By fall I usually run out of steam. Maybe this will be the year.

  10. Once your flowers open, you will feel that spring has arrived. The crocus are a lovely colour already. Spring arrived here today, don't know how long it will last, so we are making the most of it!

  15. It's fun to see them at these lovely beginning stages of blooming! I know my Hellebores are budding, because they were budding back in December! But I kept them covered with leaves, and then the snow came...and it hasn't stopped since. So, I'm especially pleased to see your cheery little blooms--mine can't be too far away. Thanks for the encouragement!
