Painting Autumn Flowers and Fruit

My watercolor inspired by the flowers of fall: purple and white Asters, bright yellow wild Helenium, blue Lobelia, toad flax (Linaria vulgaris or "Dear little bunny nose", as my girls prefer), Persicaria, and a fluffy Pennisetum.
My girls and I have been doing some paintings this week that are partly inspired by the flowers and fruits of autumn... but mostly inspired by the beautiful work of our friend Melissa Ellen. She has been posting some process photos of her watercolor paintings lately. We could not resist giving it a try ourselves!

My daughter was trying her hand at outline drawings. This mushroom worked very nicely! This is the first of 54 lessons in the Art Labs for Kids book that we are using this year. It is a great art resource for homeschooling... very detailed in materials, techniques and instructions.
My other daughter did an amazing five-year-old job at her first still life paintings!
She really just cut loose on her colors.  Wish I could have so much confidence!
Our first "art exhibit" for daddy when he came home that night.
Hope you are enjoying the flowers and fruits of fall in your own area.
Perhaps you should break out your old watercolors as well? :)

    1. Thanks Nadezda! My girls inspired me to give it a try... to set aside the laundry, etc for a few mintues and just paint. It is so hard for us adults to give things a try! :)
Hope you are still keeping warm up your way.

    1. Thanks Annie! It was stretching for me... painting is not my thing. But fun to see what we could do just by giving it a try.

  4. Thanks Julie, I really enjoyed your water color pictures. I also paint but haven't been to art class( a group of women painters that I had been painting for a long time and I paint in oil.) Wish I would have gotten into it again. Want to try to soon. Yes, I am enjoying the flowers and fruits that I see in the stores. Sheila

  9. What fun! I love when my daughter and I draw together! She has more visual artistic talent than I do, though, so her pictures are always SOOO much better than mine!
