Yucca in the Snow

Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard' shining gold in the November snow.
We woke up to more snow yesterday. It is not abnormal for it to snow in November here in Pennsylvania, but it creates some surreal sights since we still have leaves on many bushes and trees, and even a few late flowers.

The sun was just coming up to shine through the leaves in this yucca which is potted by our tiny "potager" garden. Such a juxtaposition! I love seeing this heat loving yucca glowing gold as the snow falls fluffy around it.

My posts have been fewer this month because we are packing. :) If all goes as expected, I will post next week on the new house and garden that we are going to begin recreating from its current disrepair. Some of the best things in life are where you have the chance to create beauty out of the mess... and that is never more true than in the garden.

Also, I have added a link in my header to my new professional website, Julie Witmer Garden Design. Like most of life, the website and my business are in process right now, but I thought that you all might be interested in seeing it so far. Thank you to all of my gardening friends who have encouraged me to step out to make more beauty in the world! I have needed the confidence boost that you all have help to provide!

I hope you are enjoying your gardens, even in November. :)

  3. Good luck with your design business, you deserve to be successful if you create gardens as beautiful as your own for your clients. As one designer to another I would say try to keep designs simple for clients what works for you may not for a client. I’m also looking forward to seeing your new garden and how you turn that into a beautiful garden, you must be a little sad to be leaving your own garden.

    1. Thanks Christina :) And you are so right about simplifying designs. Though, I also think that people are drawn to my gardens because they are more than just "peel & stick" - a landscape plan that could be seen in any shopping mall complex. So far, at many of the gardens that I have designed I am also able to be a seasonal gardener, helping the clients with things that have gotten away from them.

I am going to be sad not to look out my windows this winter to see our garden... and in the spring... but this one would not be here if I had not built it first. And I am looking forward to trying out some new plants & situations. So, I am trying to keep a stiff upper lip :)

  4. Your garden design skills are amazing Julie and you will make a great professional gardener for hire. I imagine you will be spending lots of time thinking and planning your new garden. How exciting! Will you be staying in Pennsylvania and the same gardening zone? Whomever bought your house will surely have a smile come springtime with that lovely garden you are leaving behind. I can't wait to see how the new progresses. It will be amazing I am certain! Good luck with the move and congratulations again on starting your business. God bless you and your family!

    1. Thank you Susan!

We are actually not selling this house, because it is our rental property. We are ready to have an entire house to ourselves now :) And we are only moving 1/2 mile away, so there will be little change in zone, though I expect it to be a bit colder of a microclimate.

I have a preliminary garden plan all ready... but of course there will be changes. A sunk garden, large pottager, rose walk, greenhouse and woodland garden are all afoot :)
