Phipps Conservatory in Fall

Dahlias at Phipps for fall.

My family took a little trip to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA last week. Phipps has some lovely outdoor gardens for this time of year! These photos were all taken in the Children's garden, which sits between two wings of the old glasshouses....

(They are actually embarking on the enormous effort of restoration in the old glasshouses this summer. I am glad not to be caring for those exposed, old palm trees as the temps plunge into the 40s at night!)

Purple and pink dahlias in profusion at Phipps...
Feather reed grass, Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster', makes a pretty backdrop for these wood benches in the pavilion.
A large planting of the sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, delighted the kids. And the large planting of vivid blue Anchusa capensis beneath it delighted me!
Purple Pitcherplant, Sarracenia purpurea subsp. purpurea, growing in the bog area beside the children's stream.
Wedding time is still in full swing at Phipps. Here I snapped a photo of one bride's dress hanging from the butterfly arbor.
A rainbow of dahlias is a pleasing end-of-summer sight here in the Children's garden at Phipps.

Hope you are enjoying a sumptuous autumn in your corner of the northern hemisphere....
and fairest spring in the south!

  1. Loved the photo of the bride's dress hanging there! At first I thought maybe it was intentional to advertise the conservatory as a wedding setting. ;) It's a beautiful place--the Dahlias are impressive!

  2. The conservatory grounds look beautiful in the Fall. I really enjoyed my visit there this past July. It's a very nice place to visit. I just love the photo of the wedding gown. It was a very beautiful dress. I am sure someone was excited to put that on...:)

  3. A special garden indeed as it puts on its fall flowers.
