Success! This is the first year that bulb pots have worked out for me. Tulip 'Ballerina' on the right and Tulip 'Virichic' on the left with a few white Anemone blanda peeking out of both.

I have finally been feeling better. Thank you for all of the well wishes I received! Vertigo for five weeks is no fun thing.

I am going out to pull more dandelions. Happy April!

  1. Vertigo for five weeks! That's rotten! I'm so glad you're feeling better! I'd never thought of potting Tulips. I might have to try that next year!

  2. Love the idea of tulips in pots - how unusual. That brilliant orange 'Ballerina' near the purple barberry is especially nice. Happy you're feeling somewhat better!

  3. I love the tulips in the pots!! May I ask - how far apart do you plant them? I think I will plant my tulips in pots this year.

    1. You get the best display by planting them close together. I planted 10 tulips in each pot, each 4-6 inches apart. They are planted on top of 8 allium bulbs, and under a few Anemone blanda. Some people plant the tulips at different layers to have earlier and later blooms of the same variety.
Look forward to seeing yours! Julie

  4. Do hope you are now feeling better, vertigo is no joke and for 5 weeks !! I tried some tulips in pots for the first time last winter and kept them in the greenhouse. A mouse had apparently made a home in the greenhouse and he promptly said thank you, and dug down and ate the lot !! Will try again next winter, but will bring them into the unheated conservatory where we don't have any mice !

  5. Vertigo for even a few minutes is horrible, I can imagine how you suffere for 5 weeks. I do hope you continue to feel better.
I love tulips in pots, they are one of my favourite things to put in pots because it is so much easier than planting them out. I remember Monty Don (TV gardener in the UK) planting in pots, then plunging the pots into the soil I think he used pond planters so they were watered naturally by the rain during the winter. Then after flowering he could more them easily to another part of the garden to die back. I alwys back them in, as I think you have done. Happy recovery, Christina

  7. Glad you are feeling better! What a fab idea to put bulbs in pots. I may have to try that for next spring. Are you getting any of this winter storm pushing through the Northeast?

  8. Karen,
It is snowing right now! Maybe I will get a few photos of our spring show in the snow tomorrow morning. I would be surprised if it lasts more than a day.
Dandelion pulling on hold though... :)

  11. Your containers look great: you're right that packing them in as close together as possible is the way forward. As well as getting good quality bulbs that will definitely sprout: I had a few half-empty pots this year as a result of scrimping and buying cheap bulbs!
