GBBD April Flowers in Pennsylvania, Zone 5

Pennsylvania, Zone 5 April flowers
The Circle Lawn on April 15th, 2012.
Welcome to GBBD April at Gilmore Gardens in Pennsylvania, Zone 5!

Our garden is still a month ahead of where it normally is in spring.  It looks much more like May from last year than April.  We are located on a corner lot in our little town, so we have lots of passersby with which to share our spring celebration. Our location contains gardens in shade, semi-shade and lots of full sun. See the map of Gilmore Gardens to link these areas together in your mind as you look around.

Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba' (Bleeding hearts), Narcissus 'Thalia' and Myosotis (Forget-me-nots) in the Shade Path Garden.

Planting by the maple tree around the Circle Lawn includes the parrot tulip, Tulipa 'White Parrot'. I love it here with the white variegated Sedum 'Frosty Morn'! A few Anemone blanda 'Blue Shades' in the lower left corner. Close-up of Tulip 'White Parrot' around the Circle Lawn.

The Front Walk Garden: Tulip 'Princess Irene' with pink English daisies, white Anemone blanda and Spirea 'Goldflame'. And of course forget-me-nots. This garden becomes ever more sunny as the season progresses.

The Front Woodland garden is shade and semi shade. Right now the Forget-me-nots and forsythia bush are packing the color, with Sedum 'Acre' giving a nice ground cover under the clumps of spiky daylily foliage.

Lots of color in the sunny Hill Garden: Tulip 'China Pink' with a few cobalt blue Muscari armenicum and lots of purple Phlox subulata. Our Curb Strip blooming this year with three Shadblow Serviceberries (Amelanchier canadensis) and one hundred Muscari 'Ocean Magic', with Sedum 'Acre' underneath. It was just a year ago that this was turf! Much more enjoyable.

  1. WOW! I LOVE your curb strip. If I lived in your town I would take a walk by your garden every day. So many colors and textures...it looks awesome!

  2. It's looking very good indeed, Julie. I agree with the above, I would pass by every day to see what's happening, but I'm lucky I can visit virtually instead! The white Parrot tulips look very like spring green in a way, don't they. Are you sure they are China Pink - they look a stronger colour than I would expect. Happy GBBD, Christina

    1. Christina,
I do believe they are lily-flowered 'China Pink'. Perhaps they look darker because they were mostly closed at the time in the overcast morning? They do lighten when open in the bright sun.

So glad you could take a walk around... even from Italy!
      Julie

  12. Your garden seems to grow more and more beautiful every day! Such a classy planting style you have - can definitely see the British influence :-) I especially like those white tulips with the 'Frosty Morn' sedum. I planted lots of 'Thalia' daffodils last fall - have my fingers crossed that they will perennialize for me.
