August Gardening ~ Garden Blogger's Bloom Day August 2016

The Hot Border in August
Hello all! August this year has brought some much needed rain, which has largely improved the garden.  Yes, there is more blight on the tomatoes. But everything else is really greened up and looking less tired than it did in July. The big pruning/dead leafing in July has done its job to create a nicer garden picture that will carry us through the autumn.

Trimming the topiary is finished up for the year.
Feather reed grass, Calamogrostis 'Karl Foerster' in the Rose garden.
Hummingbird moth on our butterfly bush, Buddleia.

Catmint, Nepeta 'Walkers Low', clipped but rebounding for the rest of the summer. I would expect a rebloom in September.

White mullein are growing from seed collected by the railroad tracks. I gathered up the grass and sowed more wild flower seeds for next year in these meadow areas under the birch trees. The gardens are bounded by the cornus stem fence this year, which we have so enjoyed.
We grew red nasturtiums in the Knot garden this year, which is still waiting for its boxwood cuttings.
Hardy hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' always wins the award for largest August flowers.
Thanks for looking around Havenwood with me!
Sweet, warm summer days to you,
~Julie

  4. Gorgeous! You mentioned boxwood cuttings. You are propogating them? I have about 8 out of 10 that I propogated last fall and have 10 more from early summer. I read that you can take cuttings in the fall..so I may make some more.
